
Sevenson Environmental, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, has started to mobilize to the site which includes bringing construction equipment, materials and temporary facilities to the site. The fence surrounding the former MGP site on Bridge Street has been removed. New fencing has been installed around the perimeter of the work area which includes the former MGP site, the retail lot on Long Island Avenue, northern portion of Bridge Street and the Village Parking Lot. Bridge Street is closed to through traffic entering from Long Island Ave but open for local traffic. The Village Parking Lot located behind the Post Office was temporarily closed to allow striping reconfiguration. The southern portion of the Parking Lot has since been reopened to the public for access and parking. The northern portion of the Parking Lot has been fenced in for use as staging area for construction equipment including the waste water treatment plant. Sevenson has started clearing and grubbing activities within the work area.
The demolition of the retail strip center located on Long Island Ave has also started and will be finished on 10/3/08. The building foundation removal will occur during soil excavation activities.
ENSR, National Grid’s Remediation Oversight Consultant performed another round of salinity monitoring in the harbor as part of the Salinity Monitoring Program. This program has been implemented since February 2008 to monitor water conditions in the harbor and will continue throughout the duration of the work.
Two-Week Outlook
Sevenson is expected to continue the mobilization of equipment, materials, and temporary facilities. Installation of the silt fencing and hay bales required for erosion and sediment control measures will be completed. Mobilization and set-up of the waste water treatment plant and the temporary fabric structure will begin. Sevenson is also expected to begin set-up and installation of the soil mix wall along the perimeter of the work area.
General hours of operation will continue to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
