Miller Environmental installing discharge
pipeline in the harbor

Sevenson Environmental, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, is continuing mobilization activities, which includes bringing construction equipment, materials and temporary facilities to the site.  Sevenson installed 300 feet of orange traffic barriers to the pedestrian walkway along the site fenceline on Long Island Ave. These barriers will provide protection to pedestrians and traffic control. Sevenson continued pre-trenching activities this week.  Debris that is removed during pre-trenching is placed inside the designated storage pad, sprayed with long duration foam and covered with a plastic liner to mitigate any potential odors until the debris is removed from the site for disposal. Last week 23 trucks were utilized to transport and dispose of 545 tons of the soil mix wall spoils to a thermal facility in New Jersey.

Sevenson’s soil mix wall subcontractor, Geocon, continued the construction of the soil mix wall along the perimeter of the site parallel to Long Island Avenue and continued along Bridge Street.  A total of 58 soil mix wall columns were installed.

Miller Environmental, National Grid’s Pipeline Contractor, has begun the installation of the pipeline that will be used for the Waste Water Treatment Plant discharge. Last week 2,400 feet of the total 3,740 feet of pipe has been welded or fused together and placed in the harbor.

National Grid determined that site operations have impacted sanitary sewer flow in Long Island Avenue, adjacent to the Post Office.  National Grid is working to remedy the problem.  National Grid contractors have been using trucks to bypass and transport sanitary water directly to the Village treatment facility.  A press release has been issued detailing the issue further.

Two-Week Outlook

Sevenson is expected to continue the mobilization of equipment, materials, and temporary facilities. Set-up of the water treatment plant will be ongoing for the next several weeks. Sevenson and Geocon are also expected to continue pre-trenching activities and the construction of the soil mix wall along the perimeter of the work area.  Mobilization of the temporary fabric structure is also scheduled to begin within the next two weeks.

National Grid contractors will be continuing the installation of the discharge pipeline thru the inner Harbor to a point beyond the breakwater.

National Grid contractors will be working in Long Island Avenue periodically to address sewer line issues.

General hours of operation on the site will continue to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Work will also be conducted on Long Island Avenue from 6:00 PM until 6:00 AM, Monday through Friday night. There will be an overnight lane closure during this work. Flagmen will assist in managing traffic both ways.
