Sevenson Environmental, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, continued mobilization of equipment and materials and winterization of the water treatment plant. Erection of the temporary fabric structure (TFS) was completed and the air handling, carbon treatment, and noise enclosure were put in place, as well as the construction of a truck decontamination pad. Only the installation of entrance and egress doors remains. No soils were transported from the site this week.
Due to the temporary shut down of the dewatering system, standing water within portions of the land-side discharge piping froze creating ice blockages within the pipeline. Sevenson replaced portions of pipeline and returned the pipeline to service. Sevenson’s dewatering subcontractor, Griffin, began operation the excavation dewatering system Wednesday and discharge of treated water commenced Wednesday afternoon. 702,175 gallons of water was treated this week bringing the total of treated water discharged from the site to 1,521,555 gallons.

Two-Week Outlook
Soil excavation within the TFS is scheduled to begin next week. An estimated 30-40 truck loads of soil are scheduled to be transported off site daily. Backfill material will be brought to the site on an as-needed basis. Site grading, access road construction, and site maintenance activities will continue in preparation for the commencement of soil excavation. Winterization of the water treatment plant will be ongoing for the next week.
Sevenson’s dewatering subcontractor will continue the operation of the excavation dewatering system in the coming weeks. Groundwater removed from the excavation footprint will be pumped to the waste water treatment plant and discharged.
General hours of operation will continue to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. To maintain the ambitious schedule for the project, beginning Saturday, January 3, for a period of at least two months, work on the site will also be conducted on Saturdays, between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
