Weekly Update, Week Ending March 7, 2009

Wind damage to the north gable end of the temporary fabric structure caused by the recent winter storm

Sevenson Environmental, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, had a minor setback due to the winter storm this week. High winds early Monday morning tore the fabric on the north gable end the temporary fabric structure (TFS); however there was no structural damage to the TFS. There was no actual excavation occurring at the time of the tear as the Contractor was in the process of moving the tent at the time. No exposed contaminated soil was inside the tent at the time the tear occurred.

Sevenson continued with the placement and connection of the air handling unit, dewatering pumps, and other ancillary equipment while awaiting delivery of replacement fabric. Once the repairs to the TFS were completed, soil excavation began at the third TFS location on Friday, March 6. 1,936.65 tons of MGP-impacted soils were transported from the site to a thermal treatment facility in Southeast Pennsylvania. The total amount of soil removed from the site to date is 17,294.48 tons.

Sevenson’s dewatering subcontractor, Griffin, completed the installation of the dewatering wellpoints and headers at the third and fourth TFS locations. Dewatering of the excavation location began on Thursday, March 5. 862,252 gallons of water was treated this week, bringing the total amount of treated water discharged from the site to 5,778,500 gallons.

Two-Week Outlook

Soil excavation and backfilling at the current TFS location is scheduled to be completed late next week. The fourth move of the TFS, connection of the ancillary equipment, and excavation activities at the fourth TFS location is anticipated by late the following week. Access road re-alignment for on-site truck traffic, site grading, and site maintenance activities will continue in preparation for excavation of the fourth location. Backfill material will continue to be delivered to the site on an as-needed basis.

Sevenson’s dewatering subcontractor will install additional dewatering wellpoints and headers prior to the commencement of excavation activities at the fourth excavation location. Dewatering operations are anticipated to continue uninterrupted in the upcoming weeks. Groundwater removed from the excavation footprint will be pumped to the water treatment plant and discharged.

National Grid contractors conducted repairs of the sewer line in Long Island Avenue this past week. The work, originally scheduled for Monday evening, was delayed until Wednesday evening due to the winter storm. The majority of the repair work was completed with the exception of approximately 50 feet of the eastern-most section of Long Island Avenue to Main Street. The completion of the sewer line repair is tentatively scheduled for early next week. The work will be conducted during the overnight hours to minimize impacts to those businesses and residences affected by the repair, and, again, one lane of Long Island Avenue from Main Street to Bridge Street will be closed with traffic controls in place to support 2-way traffic flow on Long Island Avenue.

General hours of operation will continue to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Saturdays, between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
