Sevenson Environmental, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, completed the reconnection of the air handling unit and other ancillary equipment and began excavation within the sixth and final temporary fabric structure (TFS) location on Wednesday, April 15. Excavation and backfilling was completed on Friday, April 17, thus completing the excavation and removal of MGP-impacted soils from the site. Sevenson’s survey contractor, Nelson & Pope, completed the confirmation survey of the final excavation depths and backfill materials placed within the excavation passed soil compaction tests. 1,463.61 tons of MGP-impacted soils were removed and transported from the site to a thermal treatment facility in Southeastern Pennsylvania. An additional 597.96 tons of lead-impacted soils were transported to a facility in Vineland, New Jersey for stabilization prior to disposal. The total amount of soil removed from the site to date is 34,291.30 tons.
Sevenson’s dewatering subcontractor, Griffin, continued operation the excavation dewatering system until backfilling operations were completed. The dewatering system was taken off-line on Friday and disconnection of the headers from the dewatering wellpoints was begun. 698,603 gallons of water was treated this week, bringing the total amount of treated water discharged from the site to 15,193,404 gallons.

Two-Week Outlook
The TFS will be moved one last time to the central portion of the site and deconstruction of the structure will begin early next week. Prior to the TFS move, Sevenson will disconnect the air handling unit and other ancillary equipment in preparation for demobilization from the site. Sevenson will also begin decontamination of select on-site equipment and begin preparations for the demobilization of equipment and supplies from the site. In addition, water treatment plant personnel will begin to remove insulation and heat tracing from the water treatment plant and begin sludge removal from water collection vessels. Sevenson’s dewatering subcontractor will decontaminate the dewatering pumps, headers and wellpoints prior to removal from the site, which is scheduled for early next week. Site grading and site maintenance activities will continue in the upcoming weeks. During site grading activities, it is anticipated that additional material will be transported from the site. This material, along with stabilized sludge generated from the cleaning of the water treatment plant will not be MGP-impacted soils; however, the material will be sent off site for thermal treatment. Delivery of approved material to be used to achieve final grade will commence in the upcoming weeks.

Utility crews are scheduled to return to the site the middle of next week to begin reconnection of underground utilities from Bridge Street to Long Island Avenue. The work is not anticipated to affect traffic along Long Island Avenue; however, intermittent lane closures may be necessary. Traffic controls will be in place to support 2-way traffic should work extend into Long Island Avenue. Once the underground utilities are replaced, resurfacing of Bridge Street and the portion of Long Island Avenue north of Bridge Street will commence. Notifications of potential lane closures and/or detours will be posted once the work is scheduled.
General hours of operation will continue to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Regular Saturday work has been discontinued.
