Weekly Update, Week Ending May 1, 2009

Sevenson Environmental, National Grid’s Remediation Contractor, completed the dismantling of the temporary fabric structure (TFS) this week and demobilized the structure from the site.  Utility crews continued work on site and along Bridge Street and Long Island Avenue to reconnect underground utilities across the site.  Utility excavations and site grading activities resulted in the removal of 337.03 tons of MGP and non-MGP impacted soils that were transported to a thermal treatment facility in Southeastern Pennsylvania.  An additional 33.49 tons of lead-impacted soils were removed and transported to a facility in Vineland, New Jersey for stabilization prior to disposal.  The total amount of soil removed from the site to date is 34,832.63 tons.
The water treatment plant treated and discharged 115,563 gallons of the remaining stormwater pumped from the site and groundwater pumped from the excavation of utility trenches.  The total amount of treated water discharged from the site is 15,415,998 gallons.

Miller Environmental, a Sevenson subcontractor, completed the partial removal of the water discharge line in Sag Harbor.

Two-Week Outlook

Sevenson will continue with the breakdown of the steel base-support structure of the TFS with the steel anticipated to be completely dismantled, decontaminated and removed from the site by the middle of next week.  Demobilization of decontaminated equipment and unused supplies will continue in the upcoming weeks.  Water treatment plant personnel will complete the removal of insulation and heat tracing from the water treatment plant and begin sludge removal and stabilization from water collection vessels.  Decommissioning and decontamination of non-essential water treatment plant components will begin early next week; however, the water treatment plant will remain in operation to treat any potential stormwater or additional site water that may be generated during placement of below grade utilities.  Site grading and site maintenance activities will continue in the upcoming weeks with non-MGP-impacted soils generated.  This material will be transported from the site for thermal treatment.  Once all ground intrusive activities are completed, the water treatment plant will be taken off-line, decontaminated and disassembled.  Delivery of approved material to be used to achieve final grade is anticipated to begin within the next two weeks.

Utility crews will again return to the site the beginning of next week to complete the reconnection of underground utilities from Bridge Street to Long Island Avenue.  Traffic controls will be in place to support 2-way traffic along Long Island Avenue while the utility work in Long Island Avenue is completed.  Removal of the water discharge line from the water treatment plant running beneath Long Island Avenue and terminating in Sag Harbor will be conducted in the upcoming weeks.  Once the discharge line is removed, milling and repaving of Bridge Street and Long Island Avenue will commence.  Traffic controls and/or detours will be posted prior to the resurfacing of Long Island Avenue.
General hours of operation will continue to be Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
